TWO TOROALBALÁ DON PX ON JAMES SUCKLING’S TOP 100
Last Friday, 19th January, James Suckling published his top 100 of the best wines in Spain. The famous California-born wine critic is not only an eminence when it comes to wines and cigars, but he’s also the chief executive of Wine Spectator magazine, one of the most influential in the world of wine. There, he writes about the most special wines and wineries, with more character and personality. The wine guru travelled around our country in company of his son, Jack Suckling, editor of the magazine, throughout the month of June of last year. To make the Top 100, father and son tasted approximately 1,200 wines, ranging from "wines with floral notes, highly structured" to "unctuous PX over 80 years in barrels".
At the top, with 100 points, is the Vega Sicilia Único, which is considered an iconic wine in all aspects. He is accompanied on the classification podium by Muga Rioja Prado Enea, CUNE or López de Heredia, among others. La Rioja has been the region with the best rated wines by Suckling.
The Don PX are once again among the best, getting two mentions in the classification. The first of these wines that we find in the ranking is Don Px Convento Selección1931, one of the winery's most awarded wines, valued by James Suckling with 95points. They comment that it’s a wine “of deep intensity, jet black in colour and with a series of very characteristic aromas, where orange peel, fig, prune, vanilla and toffee stand out. Its finish is especially surprising with memories of pure cocoa”.
The second classified wine, Don PX Vieja Cosecha 1973 receives a total of 94 points. This wine is characterized by its freshness described by Toro Albalá "with herbaceous and minty notes, as well as its finish, reminiscent of cinnamon". These exceptional Pedro Ximénez grape wines are the only fortified wines that appear in the article and, therefore, also the only ones from the D.O. Montilla-Moriles to have made their place among the good reviews of James.
