MONTILLA-MORILES WINS IN THE AEPEV AWARDS

THE DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN MONTILLA-MORILES, WINS IN THE AWARDS OF THESPANISH ASSOCIATION OF WINE JOURNALISTS AND WRITERS (AEPEV).

Montilla,1st January, 2017, The wines of Montilla-Moriles DOP triumph in the annual Awards given by the Association of Wine Journalists and Writers (AEPEV), being the Denominación de Origen most awarded with four awards, in addition to obtaining the award from the International Federation of Wine Journalists and Writers (FIJEV) to the most voted wine, which has gone to the sweet wine Pedro Ximénez 1986 from Bodegas Toro Albalá, Aguilar de la Frontera.

The Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers (www.aepev.es), is an organization of wine journalists, communicators, editors and writers who share the passion for wine, the vine and the wine industry, to which they dedicate their time, either as a main or partial professional occupation, from the practice of journalism, criticism, technical or descriptive writing in any of the many facets that the world of wine offers us.

The members of the AEPEV have chosen in its VIII Edition the Best Wines and Spirits of Spain in a double round vote in which more than 90% of its members have taken part and in which they have had to decide among the 1055 proposed brands in the first phase of the contest, where a total of 143 wines and 41 spirits went to the final in the 11 chapters they opted for.

Andalusia, with eight wines and spirits and Galicia, with seven, have become the most awarded Autonomous Communities, accompanied by Catalonia and Castilla y León, with four brands; Castilla-La Mancha and the Valencian Community, with three brands; Extremadura with two brands and Navarra and the Basque Country, with one brand in each case.

The most voted wine with 115 points was Don PX 1986 Gran Reserva, from theMontilla-Moriles DOP, which will receive the International Federation of Wine Journalists and Writers Award (FIJEV) by being ahead of Pago del Vicario Petit Verdot Rosado 2015, Wine from the Land of Castilla, with 110 points; and Gramona Imperial Brut Gran Reserva 2008, from Cavas Gramona with 101 points, which have earned it the Hotel Ritz Award for the most voted sparkling wine. The Lavinia Award for the generous most voted has gone to Tío Pepe en Rama, by González Byass, within the Jerez-Manzanilla de Sanlúcar DOP boundaries and the Santa Cecilia Award for the most voted spirit to the Pazo de Señoráns Orujo Blanco, from the DE Orujo de Galicia.

By denominación de origen and specifics, the highest awards have gone to Montilla-Morileswith four, followed by Cava, with three; Rías Baixas, Jerez-Manzanilla de Sanlúcar and Orujo de Galicia, with two and Navarra, Rioja, Ribera de Duero, Cigales, Utiel-Requena, Valencia, Wines of the Land of Castilla, Wines of the Land of Extremadura, Conca de Barberá, Valdeorras, Wines of the Land of Castilla y León, Toro, Brandy de Jerez and Orujo de Galicia, with one in each case. A total of five products are out of denominación.

Of the 184wines and spirits that went to the final phase, 47 belong to Andalusia, 27 to Castilla y León, 22 to Galicia, 20 to Castilla-La Mancha and Catalonia, 11 to La Rioja, 9 to the Valencian Community, 6 to Extremadura, 3 to the Canary Islands, two to Aragon, the Balearic Islands and Murcia and 1 to Cantabria and the Basque Country. The most awarded winery has been Hispano-Suizas with three awards: Impromptu Rosé 2015 in Pink wines; Bobos Finca Casa La Borracha 2014 in2014 and 2015 Red Wines; and Tantum Ergo PN Rosé 2014 in Sparkling.
