Toro Albala’s Don PX thrills Robert Parker once more

The wines from Bodegas Toro Albalá have been awarded once again with outstanding Parker scores by the official taster in Spain, Mr. Luis Gutiérrez.

If we go back I time, in 2013 a sweet vintage wine from our winemaker Mr. Antonio Sánchez impressively get 100 Parker points for the first time. Now, four years later, our wines continue to obtain the highest rating scores. We refer to Don PX Convento Selección 1946, which has been listed as one of the best wines in history with 100 Parker points.

Mr. Robert Parker is the director of the prestigious Wine Advocate magazine and is considered an authority in the wine world. His representative in Spain, Mr. Luis Gutiérrez, was responsible for the tasting and assessment of “Spain: Current Releases from Jerez and other fortified and sweet wines from Andalusia”.

In the mentioned article at Robert Parker’s magazine, Mr. Gutiérrez talks about “wines independently of Jerez or Montilla, Sherry” as he describes them and clarifies that “they are alive and kicking”. He celebrates how in a decade these unique wines in the world are positioning themselves every time better in the market thanks to their authenticity and uniqueness. Luis Gutierrez also explains how it is increasingly common that the market value for generous wines nowadays ranges between 80 euros to 150 euros on average. The report raises a hopeful future and acclaims a new era for Andalusian wines. It alludes to the arrival of Peter Sisseck to Andalusia, a reputed wine man seeking chalky soils to make generous wines. ¿Will he be part of the coming revolution?

What we certainly know is that the results are again revolutionary for the house of Antonio Sánchez. We should make an assessment taking into account Mr. Parker rating system and what his points means. It is said that wines rated with more than 96 points are considered “Extraordinary” thanks to their profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. These wines rated between 90 and 95 points are considered “Out of the standard”. Therefore, outstanding wines of exceptional complexity and character. For these wines with ratings between 80 and 89 we can say that they are “barely above the average to very good wine” displaying various degrees of finesse and favour as well as character.

The scores given to Toro Albalá winery are the following:

1958 Don PX Convento Selección has been given 97- 98 points.

1970 Don PX Convento Selección has been given 94-96 points.

1964 Palo Cortado Marqués de Poley has been given 94- 96 points.

1974 Don PX Vieja Cosecha  has been given 94 points.

1952 Amontillado Convento Palma has been given 93-95 points.

1988 Don PX Old Wine has been given 91-93 points.

Fino Eléctrico Del Lagar  Saca de Primavera has been given 89 points.

Some tasting notes on the assesed wines are really special and deserve to be mentioned, like the one wrote for Don PX Convento Selección 1958 “a very complex and nuanced wine with notes of charred wood, tar, coal, bitter dark chocolate, licorice, roasted coffee beans and aromatic herbs. The palate is compact with no fissures and a bitterness that compensates the sweetness (it has 350 grams of sugar, so it’s not a surprise that it doesn’t feel as sweet as others). It’s relatively dense, complex, rare and unique. They expect to produce 14,200 bottles of this elixir.” Moreover, the tasting note for Palo Cortado 1964 Convento Selección describes the wine as “Wines like this are not meant to be consumed by the general public (the price already prevents that) as their style is not easy to appreciate and might seem aggressive to some”

The whole team at Bodegas Toro Albalá is proud to share the enormous satisfaction that entails being inside one of the most prestigious lists of the wine world. Maintaining the position for four years at the top of the ranking is the result of the constant effort for the highest quality, the exclusivity of each harvest and craftsmanship in all our products.
